There are certain items that I consider to be grudge purchases, and buying a bra falls into that category.  It’s so hard to find one with the perfect fit, and when you finally get settled on a style, they either discontinue it, modify it, or replace it with something new and improved.  Plus, good-quality bras are expensive; so, if you find the perfect fit and spent some cash on it then you want to provide the best care possible.

In a prior post, we shared with you how often clothes should be washed, professionally wet cleaned, or dry cleaned, and with things like underwear, socks, bras, t-shirts, tanks, camisoles, basically anything that rubs right next to your skin all day long, it should be washed after every wearing, especially during hot summer months.  What’s the best way to go about doing this?  I checked three of my bras and all of them said to handwash, which I have to say I’ve never done.  At A Cleaner World, we always recommend that you follow the manufacturers care label when caring for all your garments.

But I will tell you that handwashing 7 bras a week (and that’s if you are the only female in the house) is a time-consuming task.  Here’s how I go about caring for my bras:

  1. I place each bra in its own mesh laundry bag to keep it from getting tangled with other garments.
  2. I wash them with other garments of the same weight, never putting them in with a load of towels or heavy items for fear of having them get crushed or distorted.
  3. I wash them on delicate in warm water using a mild detergent.
  4. I never place them in the dryer.  Instead, I lay them flat to dry making sure they are shaped properly.
  5. Once they are dry, I fold and stack them in a drawer to make sure they keep their shape.

Before writing this post, I consulted several well-trusted websites, and they all said machine washing bras, using the method I follow, is an acceptable method.  But remember to always consult a garment’s care label before cleaning.  If you have any questions or suggestions when it comes to caring for your unmentionables, you can always shoot us an e-mail at
