My Son Can Sew A Button

My son has a very short attention span. When he becomes fixated on something, I usually don’t worry because it never lasts too long. But he has been fixated on Cub Scouts for a really LONG, LONG time. After signing up, he was the first one in his den to get the uniform and to earn the tiger cub badge. He’s attended every event, and he’s read and carried his handbook around so much that it started falling apart in October. Four months later he is still fixated on Cub Scouts. Now that he has his tiger cub badge, he is all about earning beads to string onto the badge. So for every 10 electives he does, he gets a bead. We are about to run out of electives for him to complete. But here’s one we recently did:

He learned how to properly sew a button. He was really excited to learn and actually did a great job. Well, except for the part where he kept pulling the thread out of the needle. I guess Martha Stewart was right after all, sewing a button is an incredibly easy task that anyone can do.

Tree Down

My mom has said to me a number of times that I need to write a book. She’s referring to all the crazy things that happen in our house….well, probably in my life in general. Here’s our latest happening:

Of course this occurred when Matt was out of town. Thankfully our only neighbor happened to not be traveling as well so it only lay on the floor for about an hour. I talked to Greg, the managing partner of A Cleaner World Carpet & Rug Cleaning, after the fact to make sure I handled it properly. Seems I did a decent job. So if your tree crashes and soaks your carpet too, here’s how to handle it:

1. Extract as much water as you can. If you don’t have a home carpet cleaner, you can use a wet/dry vac. If you don’t have the ability to extract the water, you can always call Greg at 336-804-0045.

2. Create air movement using a floor fan that puts out a lot of air. If you don’t have one, consider renting one. Another option is to use a dehumidifier, which takes in moist air and puts out dry air. Be sure to point the exhaust toward the wet area.

The big takeaway is to do these two things as quickly as possible. Mold and bacteria growth start to take place in 72 hours.

So this catastrophe didn’t cause too much damage. It was more of an aggravation – especially given that my living room was a mess for about three days. Finally I’m pleased to say that our tree has stayed upright for over a week now.

An Example of Great Customer Service

Two years ago, Dot Oliphant from Five Points Motors had had one too many bad experiences with her current commercial services provider. “Just thinking about it now makes my blood pressure go up,” she said. So in June of 2011 she went looking for a business card Scottie Springer, Customer Service Manager for A Cleaner World’s Uniform and Commercial Services Division, had dropped off during a recent visit. And since then “everything has been good from the get go,” she told me.

I asked how. “Never once did my old company make a special trip for one item. A Cleaner World has,” she explained. She went on to tell me that one of their guys had gotten a hole in a pair of pants, had forgotten to tag them, and as a result they didn’t get put on the truck. When she discovered it she called Scottie who quickly dropped off another pair. She went on to share complimentary stories on their uniform shirt logo, the route driver, and the extra mile put in by our staff.

It’s that going the extra mile that has caused her to recommend A Cleaner World to others. And the bottom line she gave me was that she is extremely happy. That reminds me of a quote by Benjamin Franklin – ‘Well done is better than well said.’ Agreed. Well done Scottie and team.

Upcoming Holiday Event

Here’s a phenomenon that has long bothered me: as cities grow, they tend to build bigger and better further out and just vacate downtown areas, many times causing those areas to deteriorate over time. I’ve watched this happen to my hometown in Indiana, and it makes me incredibly sad. So whenever I learn about associations and communities that come together to revitalize the heart of their city, well I am simply thrilled. Welcome to Uptowne High Point, a thriving downtown filled with furniture showrooms, shops, restaurants, and historic neighborhoods.

On Saturday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Uptowne High Point will be celebrating Christmas with the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. Holiday Stroll – A Dickens Christmas will be filled with music, carriage rides, crafts, and even a visit from Santa. For a complete schedule of events, click here. It looks to be a fun-filled day. I hope you come out and support your local, thriving downtown.
